Sea Lion Island, Sea Lion Island

#7 of 8 in Nature in Falkland Islands
Nature / Park · Hidden Gem · Island
A nature lover's and photographer's dream, Sea Lion Island is a major bird and seal breeding ground, and home to over 25 species of plants. While there, you can observe sea lions, elephant seals, steamer ducks, penguins, giant petrels, and ruddy-headed geese. Plantations growing tussac grass--used in basket making--cover about one fifth of the island, where you can also find sandy beaches and a few ponds. During the later months of the year, killer whales appear, stalking the seals breeding ashore.
